Living with an Autistic child can be challenging. The challenges only get worse when you need to travel for vacation or holidays. However, there are steps you can take to make traveling less stressful.

Keep a List - Create a list of tasks and items that need to be packed that can be used for each trip. If your list doesn't change very much, you can laminate it and leave it in your suitcase. Another option is to create a computer file with the basic list and print it out each time. Changes can be made in the computer before printing or by hand afterwards.

Build a Connection Early - Do your best to plan trips in advance. Begin by talking with your child. Speak positively about the trip and build excitement. Describe where you will be going and what they will experience. Try to find pictures, stories and activities to help them build a connection with the place. If they are verbal, ask questions to encourage them to talk about their feelings and expectations about the trip.

Include Comfort Items - Bring along items that are familiar and bring them comfort such as their pillow and blanket. Be sensitive to sensory issues. For instance, if they are very sensitive to smells, bring along things that smell calming to them.

Communicate With Others. If your child likes to wander on their own, it is important to let others aware. This way family, friends, or hotel staff can be aware that they may need to be of assistance.

Don't Neglect Breaks - Never travel in the car for more than 2 hours without stopping. This is physically demanding on anyone, especially children. Even a potty break at a rest area is enough to get the blood flowing again. Try your best to get non-stop flights to avoid long layovers. When layovers must occur, find ways to take sensory breaks. Sit your child where they can't see the activity or play their favorite music using headphones that will cover their ears and block outside noise.

Our Early Flight Travel Secret

We live in Minnesota. Bad weather during winter months is a way of life for us. After several trips of rousing kids at 3:30 am to make a 6 or 7 am flight, we've found a better way.

When we have an early flight, we do Stay and Fly at a hotel by the airport. This program allows us to spend a night, and leave our car parked in a secure area while we travel, for one package price. We live about 45 minutes from the airport on a clear day with no traffic. When we throw in early morning rush hour and the potential for snow and ice, an early morning flight can be a recipe for disaster.

We've also found that it is difficult to find volunteers with large enough vehicles to drive us to the airport that early in the morning. Five people with even a modest amount of luggage, plus a driver, will fill up most vehicles.

Of course, we could park at the airport and pay astronomical parking rates, but using hotel Stay and Fly programs works better for many reasons:

1. We're closer to the hotel in the morning. I never sleep the night before an early flight because I'm nervous we'll oversleep. When I'm sleeping five minutes from the airport, I sleep like a baby, knowing that even if we do oversleep, we are unlikely to miss our flight.


2. I have the entire day before we leave (usually while the kids are at school) to run around and make sure no lovies are left behind, pets have been dropped off, toothbrushes made it into suitcases and no faucets are dripping. Now that the kids are older and I have fewer things to worry about with them, I've started scheduling my carpet cleaning for that last day before we leave. The floors have an entire week to dry before kids are trampling on them again.


3. Going to a hotel the eve of the trip also means I'm packed a day earlier and we have time to pick up last minute items on our way to our airport hotel.


4. In the morning, when we wake up at the hotel, it is quick and easy to have the kids scan the room to make sure nothing was left behind and then send them down to breakfast while I finish getting ready and my husband delivers our bags to the shuttle driver.


5. Best of all, when we land back at our home airport, all we have to do is call the hotel shuttle and have them come to pick us up. By the time we're back at the hotel our car is warm, cleared of snow and ready to drive home.

How to Get the Best of Airline Flights Every Time

It is always a great feeling to get the corner office. You know that office that comes with a promotion as well as a bump in your pay grade. One of the perks of the new status is the means of travel and the allowance for travels. I really looked forward to that part as I have always had a fascination for air travel as well as cheap holidays. Trains have never been my favorite if I wish to compare holidays while cars take forever to get to the destination but airplanes get you there is a jiffy. 

At least comparatively speaking. Don't get me wrong, I love the countryside views as much as the next person but when you get used to getting things done in a jiffy, slow just loses its appeal to you. One thing I had problem figuring out was just how to get the cheapest airfare out of the airline flights I will now have to take in order to fulfill the duties of my new office.

Luckily, I was going to spend the first few months travelling in the company of my boss who is an accomplished traveler and an established bargain hunter. His reputation preceded him in the office and I was eager to learn at his feet.

My first lesson was in the airline to use in our travels. For a cheap flight to Europe I was specifically asked to use one of the budget airlines. Man, was I surprised! Lesson number one I was told. You are about to board another plane for yet another business trip. "Wow.", you think, "This is my forth trip this month. I am wasting way to much time traveling and things are falling behind."

It need not be this way. If you are disciplined and plan ahead you can turn you travel time into valuable and productive work time. This article provides some advice and guidelines to maximize your ability to do this.

Travel is a brilliant opportunity not only to catch up on unread emails and get in some reading time, but also to shift your mind into a different gear. It can be creative time too.

Have your tools ready.

If you want to use the time correctly, make sure that you pack correctly. Have your notebook (paper or computer) available and easy to access. IF you are going to struggle to get it out, hitting people over the head as you pry it from the overhead compartment, not only are you going to battle but the glares alone from your fellow passengers will be enough to put you off.

Ensure you have enough power.

I'm not only referring to charged batteries for your notebook, but also your own individual power. To get on a flight exhausted and with a hangover does not make for a good productive session. If you know you are catching that early morning flight, get a good nights rest rather than burning that midnight oil. Take a rain check on those last 4 drinks in the hotel bar for the next trip. Not only will you arrive at your destination fueled and charged, but your creative spurt during your travels will inspire you for the rest of the day.

Don't forget to save.

There are few things worse than that feeling of opening your notebook and realizing that you did not press the save button. All that work, time and effort down the drain. So, ensure that you have auto save on as standard to minimize this risk. Consider, also backing up your work to a flash drive while you are on the road. Ensure that you store your flash drive away from your notebook. If your notebook gets lost or stolen, at least you will have your work or presentation on your flash drive and all will not be lost.

The US highway system is jammed during Memorial Day and Labor Day, for example, are two more days that seem to get tons of traffic. The reason is pretty simple though, these happen to be the days that mark the beginning and end of summer so families want to start the summer off right or get in one more trip before it is back to school for kids. Oddly enough Valentine's Day and over the Easter holidays you get a spike in traffic as well due to people wanting to connect with others or attend services.

By an large, travel of in any form is a lot more difficult on weekends than on weekdays regardless of the season. State highway safety boards record that there is more traffic between Friday evening and Monday morning than at any other time of the week. 

Airline companies report that there are more passengers on weekends as well, and likewise bus service lines and passenger trains say that there is a marked increase in people going to and fro. 

Of note is that when you look at hotel and motel accommodation rates, they are generally higher on weekends because this gives them the needed boost to make up for the lack of business during the week. 

If you expect to get into any nice places to eat or see a packed show, you should expect that the weekend is going to be the busiest time and plan accordingly.

The worst possible time to travel during the day is between 9 AM and 9 PM. You will find more traffic on the roads, most train services and airlines report that these too are also the times when passengers prefer to travel. Airfares also cost more during prime flight hours than they do red eye flights.

Air Travel - Flight Travel Class in Airlines and Their Features

Air Travel passengers enjoy various options in terms of services provided by airlines. Starting from the ticket booking process, a customer can choose from a range of prices, comforts, entertainment and the quality of the services at different levels of a journey. As obvious, the best services are the most expensive ones.

A set of services airlines provide is called air travel class. It may vary from carrier to carrier. It also changes according to the area a flight operates in. Flight operators are free to choose what service they prefer to offer and there are no rules set for this. Travel operators also re-brand the service categories of the flights they offer. Airline travel types may be classified as:

Economy Class: Also called the tourist category and most reasonable in terms of price.

Business Class: This is the relatively expensive and almost luxurious.

First Class: Best services with highest price. Sometimes, more than three times expensive than economy service.

Airlines do classify their services as may be best for them. For example: Business class and First class services are merged in many international flights. Similarly, low-cost carriers dissolve all services into one economy class and discount economy class. In this case passengers are provided with the same facilities and comforts with slight variation in terms of services.

All That May be included in a service:

First Class Travel is premium service package that includes luxurious amenities. The cabin is mostly located in the front area of the aircraft with restricted entry. Economy travelers are not allowed to enter this cabin. The limited number of seats are available in this category. The seats are spacious and comfortable. It offers entertainment options, games, special meals and better privacy during the flight.

While it may cost much more that the normal flight ticket, post-flight limousine services and special check-in facility are special features that make is valuable.

Business travel is almost equally comfortable with few exceptions. Some commercial airlines provide business class as the highest level of service. They do not have a special first class. It is located in the middle of the aircraft and rear of first level. Better seats, special meals and drinks are included along with entertainment services.

Another level of service some airlines offer is Premium Economy. It falls between economy class and business class services. It differs from economy class in terms of the better seats and some services like meals and media options. The cost of the premium class is almost similar to economy class but the services are better. So this is a good value for money option for a little more money.

Economy is the least expensive of all. Here seats are simpler and limited. Short span travels may not include meals and other services may be paid. This class is located in the rear of an aircraft. Entertainment options are limited and can also be paid sometimes. The Cost is significantly less than other travel class prices.

... And Flight Travel Class also change according to international and domestic flights. Domestic flights' offer Economy and Domestic First Class depending upon the flight operator. In this case also the cost of the flight and the services offered are the factors that cause variation.
