Smart Traveling

Planning a vacation? Here are a few simple steps to insure a safe and budget friendly vacation.
First you need to decide which type of vacation is right for you. Is it taking a cruise, going to an all inclusive resort, camping, staying in a hotel or taking a one day trip?
For Nature & Wildlife lovers you may want to consider going camping. If sleeping in a tent is not exactly for you. That is OK because campgrounds are no longer just for tents and campers. Most have cabins and/or cottages for extremely reasonable rates. So don't let that steer you away from campgrounds. In addition to that you can find lots of family activities for great prices.
Or maybe an All-Inclusive Resort is more up your alley. With this type of vacation all major cost such as meals, lodging, transportation, & activities will be covered in one price. If you're going with a group of people you should think about renting a vacation home. You can split the cost and still have a bedroom of your own. Another added advantage to this is that you will have a kitchen to cook in so you won't be forced to eat out for every meal.
Once you decide on the type of vacation you will then need to decide on the type of transportation. If you plan on flying remember being flexible and scheduling your trip in the middle of the week could alone save you hundreds of dollars. You may also want to check for airports that may be a little further out. For even more savings you should skip the cabs and check for free shuttles to and from the airport. If free shuttles are not available then consider using public transportation. Now if you decide to drive to your destination you are going to want to make sure your vehicle is safe and fuel friendly by giving your car a quick check up paying special attention to the oil and having the appropriate amount of air in the tires.
Now here is one of the most important steps of all. Make sure to take the time to do some price comparison. You don't have to spend hours upon hours on this task but it is an extremely important step to ensure a safe and budget friendly vacation. By utilizing the following websites you can comparison shop airfare, hotels, car rentals, vacation packages, cruises and more within minutes:
Expedia- known for the "Thank You Rewards Program"
Travelocity- known for the "Fare Watcher Plus"
Priceline- known for the "Name your own Price-get deeper discounts"
In addition to the above there are still a few more things you can do. Like check the local newspaper and guide books for discount coupons. Purchase sunscreen, hair products, toothpaste and other necessities before you leave. Plan snacks in advance and stay away from vending machines and convenient stores. Pack light. Not only will it help eliminate irritating luggage hassles it will save you time and money. Keeping all these things in mind will help you to be a smart traveler. Happy Traveling!

Smart Travel for the Budget Weary Family

All over the news, plaguing the newspaper headlines and dampening our fondness for SUVs, it is no surprise that Americans are increasingly weary of the escalating gas prices. With summer vacations in the minds of most Americans in need of a break, families all over the country are reluctant to plan those all-important family vacations. After all, why shed the bucks on your gas-guzzler when you can stay at home, fill up the plastic kiddie pool, and have yourself an old-fashioned barbeque?
Although the prospect of lighting up the coals on the ole' grill brings back fond memories of summers past, Americans are overlooking the heart of the situation. Family vacations are at the core of what brings families together, what takes mom and dad out of the office, and what creates lasting memories that your children look back on for the rest of their lives. Forgoing the summer vacation and surrendering to gas prices is not the answer. Knowing how to plan a smart summer vacation IS the answer. Here are a few tips for preserving the oh-so precious budget before and during your family vacation:
  • Choose your destination wisely- Chose a summer hot spot within an easy drive from your home. When considering the destination, make sure you choose an area with concentrated attractions for the whole family. The goal here is to drive to the hotel (within a day), park the family vehicle in the hotel garage, and never drive it until you are ready to leave. {East Coast families interested in a beach getaway should consider destinations such as Virginia Beach, VA or Ocean City, MD}
  • Research alternate transportation- Many popular vacation destinations offer seasonal transportation just for tourists. Look into public transportation as well as special shuttles from attraction to attraction. Some hotels even offer free shuttles from the hotel to popular area attractions.
  • Shop the Internet- The Internet, with it's wide array of travel-oriented websites, is the best place to start your research. Avoid the major travel websites that will only provide brief summaries of your favorite destinations. Instead, check out the local, "mom and pop" websites that often provide detailed information and expert advice. When keying in your search term, avoid generic terms like "Ocean City" or "Virginia Beach". Instead, try: "Ocean City transportation" or "Virginia Beach vacation packages."
  • Take it easy- The best vacations are ones that are not jam-packed with activities all day every day. Plan a day or two of activities to area attractions and play everything else "by ear." A day lounging at the hotel pool, or sunbathing on the beach is relaxing, and better yet, FREE! Bring a volleyball or football for the kids while you are getting that much needed R&R.

Cheap Travel Websites - The Best of the Best

Over the years travel websites like Orbitz have changed the game of travel. Or so people think. The truth of the matter is, most travel agents (at least the good ones) laugh at a lot of these websites. Why? Simply put, those sites have no brains behind them. They simply show you what you request, and don't think of different routes to try or places where it could buy a wholesale fare. That's why I want to take a few minutes and show the travel websites that will get you cheap flights.
Kayak.com As a travel agent, many of us would use this website as the index for what people would expect to pay for a flight. Of all the travel websites out there, Kayak was the only one we measured against. I always recommend this site to people in a rush.
Vayama.com A trade secret, though not for much longer. Unlike many other travel website, this one has access to wholesale fares, and you will often find flights here cheaper than anywhere else. The catch? These special fares are usually only worthwhile on international trips.
Wholesalers. While this isn't one website, it's worth it to search for the term "airline consolidators." This is an age old industry trick, where you buy at wholesale and sell at retail. The secret is leaking out; many companies are getting smart and selling directly to consumers. Call them up for a quote and compare it against your travel agent's price: this tells you how much they make if you buy with them.
Travelocity.com/lastminutedeals. As I mentioned earlier, most of the big cheap travel websites don't offer much value, but I have used Travelocity's last minute deals page on several trips.
Swabiz.com This gives you access to Southwest Airlines web only fares. Probably the best website for cheap travel. Seriously.
