I've travelled through almost every continent and have come to
the realization that there is one rule of thumb when you're travelling
around the world: at some point you're going to lose your luggage.
Whether you're travelling by airplane, train, bus or car, you can count
on your baggage being delayed, lost or stolen in action. When it
happens, it's best to be prepared. Here's a quick guide to help you
decide what to pack in your hand luggage wherever you go.
The bag
The trick is to always travel with a backpack or carry-on bag that complies with airline size regulations. Ensure that it is comfortable to carry and that you don't go overweight.
Important papers
Passport, tickets, address book and wallet: make sure you keep all your important documents and papers on you at all times.
Clothes
Always pack a couple of fresh changes of clothes when you're travelling. I always find that a warm fleece or jumper comes in handy for long flights where they tend to pump up the air-conditioning. Comfortable trousers are also a must, alongside a couple of t-shirts and a few pairs of socks. If you're going to visit people you know and they've planned a welcome party it might be an idea to include a lightweight dress or skirt so you're not caught with out anything to wear: there's nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable and unattractive on your first night!
Toiletries
Make sure that anything you take on board complies with regulations. These days you can buy mini-versions of almost any deodorant or shampoo. Don't forget some moisture cream and lip balm in case the air-conditioning dries your skin.
Swimwear
If you're travelling somewhere hot, a bikini doesn't take much space and can save a lot of hassle if worse comes to worse. While many things are easy to buy or borrow, a bikini is a very personal item of clothing and can be hard to find in the right size.
Medication
If you take any special medication, make sure you carry it with you at all times. When you're doing multiple flights or travelling for long periods of time, you really won't want to be stranded without your medicine, especially in out of the way places where the local pharmacy probably doesn't stock what you're after.
Underwear
Just in case your luggage gets lost or delayed don't forget to bring some clean underwear. Those of you travelling to visit a lover should also remember to sneak some sexy lingerie into your bag and perhaps some stockings for your first night out.
